How ToSave View: remember your map position

Why use Save View
Save View is a simple way to make your map feel familiar every time you open it.
Instead of zooming and panning to the same place each time you open the map page, you can set a preferred starting view. This is especially helpful if you regularly work in one part of the garden, such as a nursery area, walled garden, or main collection.
It is optional, easy to use, and easy to undo.
In short
- Save View remembers where your map is looking
- It saves position, zoom, and rotation for your workspace
- It does not save base map, overlays, or filters
- You can clear or replace it at any time
Where to find it
Open the signed-in Map page.
On the left side of the map, you will see a vertical column of round controls, including zoom, Search Location, and My Location.
Look for the pin icon (the 6th button).
- When nothing is saved, the tooltip shows Save View (Pin icon)
- When a view is already stored, it shows Clear Saved View (Pin-off icon)
Once a view is saved, the icon changes to a pin-off style. This helps you see at a glance that your workspace has a saved view.
What Save View stores
Save View stores the map camera for your current workspace.
This includes:
- The centre of the map, where you are looking
- The zoom level
- The bearing, meaning map rotation
- The pitch, meaning tilt, for example if you used 3D Terrain
Only one saved view is stored per user, per workspace. Saving again replaces the previous one.
What Save View does not store
It is just as important to know what is not included.
Saved: Map centre, Zoom level, Rotation, Tilt
Not saved: Base map, such as Countryside or Aerial, Overlays from Map Display, such as grid or historic imagery, Sidebar filters and search, Selected plant, landmark, area, or shape
Good to know
Use Map Display for how the map looks. Use Save View for where the map points.
How to save a view
- Open the Map page
- Pan and zoom to the area you want as your starting point
- Adjust rotation and tilt if needed
- Click Save View using the pin button
When the save works, the button changes to Clear Saved View and shows the pin-off style.
That is your confirmation.
How to clear a saved view
To remove your saved view:
- Click the same button when it shows Clear Saved View
This clears the stored view for next time you open the map.
It does not move or reset the map immediately. You stay exactly where you are. The change only applies on your next visit.
When your saved view is used
Your saved view is applied when you open the Map page for that workspace.
- If you have a saved view and open the map normally, it restores your centre, zoom, rotation, and tilt
- If you follow a link to a specific plant, landmark, area, or shape, that record takes priority and the map focuses on it
- If no saved view exists, the map may use default behaviour, such as fitting visible plants
This makes sure links always work as expected while still giving you a consistent starting point in normal use.
Workspaces and teams
Saved views are personal and tied to your workspace.
- Each workspace has its own saved view for you
- Switching workspace loads that workspace’s saved view, if one exists
- Other team members in the same workspace have their own saved views
This means everyone can set up their own preferred starting position without affecting others.
Practical tips
- Save your view after you have finished framing the map, not while still adjusting
- Re-save if your focus shifts, for example when you start working in a new area
- If the map opens at an odd angle, you may have saved a rotated or tilted view, clear it, reset using the compass, then save again
- You can pair your preferred background in Map Display with your saved view, but remember they are separate settings
Common issues and fixes
“It didn’t remember my map”
Check you were in the correct workspace, then save again after panning.
“It always opens on one plant”
You may be using a link that includes a specific record. That overrides your saved view for that visit.
“Everything still zooms out”
There may be no saved view yet, or you opened a link that controls the map position.
“I cleared it but nothing happened”
Clearing affects the next time you open the map, not your current session.
“My base map changed but the position stayed”
That is expected. Save View does not store base map choice. Use Map Display to adjust the background.
Closing checklist
- Correct workspace selected
- Map framed how you want it to open
- Clicked Save View and see the pin-off icon
- Understand that Clear Saved View affects the next visit
- Know that links to a specific plant or landmark override your saved view on that open
Save View is a small feature, but it makes a big difference to daily use. Once set, your map opens where it makes sense for you, without any extra steps.
